Using Mandrill® to send out mailing lists

Mandrill is a neat service that can be used to send out mailings, newsletters, or any other mass mailing. It offers email tracking, bounces, reports, all that cool stuff that’s really useful when you’re sending thousands of emails per month. Even better, you can use it for free to send up to 12,000 emails per month. How neat is that?

Objectif Lune, Inc. is not affiliated with Mandrill® or The Rocket Science Group. We offer Mandrill integration as a convenience and cannot offer support for their websites and services.

So how do we use Mandrill? Let’s take a look first at getting the appropriate information necessary to use it within OL® Connect technology:

  1. Login to your Mandrill account.
  2. Go to the Settings page on the left.
  3. Click on New API Key.
  4. Enter a description, for example My Mailing List, then click Create API Key
  5. From this window, take note of the following critical information:
    • The Host (
    • The SMTP Username (your Mandrill login)
    • The API Key just created, which is indicated in the list at the bottom of the page.

Setting up Connect

With the appropriate information in hand, you are ready to configure Connect to use Mandrill.

  1. Go to Window, Preferences
  2. In the Email section, click SMTP.
  3. In the section, the Host should already be the right one.
  4. Make sure Use authentication is checked, and put in your SMTP Username in the box below.
  5. Click on OK to save these settings.

Sending your first Email batch

Now it’s time to send your emails!

At this point, you will actually send emails if you use the Send Email option. Just make sure you get a fair warning, here.

To send an email in TEST mode (emails are only sent to a single address):

  1. Open your template, and activate the Email Context.
  2. If not done automatically, open a valid data mapping configuration, too.
  3. Click on Send Test Email in the toolbar, or click FileTest Email.
  4. Enter the test email sender in the From section, and an email recipient for your tests in the To section.
  5. In the Outgoing mail settings section, select in the Presets drop-down.
  6. In the Password box, type in the API Key you created on the website.
  7. Click Finish to send the email.

Mandrill also has a Test function you can use. When creating an API key in Settings, you can check the Test Key option. Check out the Mandrill documentation for more details.

Mandrill no longer appear to have a free account. Mailgun and some others do as at Dec 2018.
